Apply for the South African Medical Research Council SAMRC Internship Scholarship Programme

The 2020-2021 rollout of the South African Medical Research Council SAMRC Internship Scholarship Programme is currently in motion. The closing date is 31 May 2020.

Those eligible to apply include Masters and PhD students keen to further their studies in terms of Clinical/Health Research.

Designed to develop Black Scientists, i.e. African Black, Coloured, Indian and Asians through mainly the PhD degree, in compelling cases, Master’s degree studies will be considered.

The South African Medical Research Council SAMRC Internship Scholarship Programme aims to transform the composition of the country’s health and clinical research human capital to be more representative of the face and demographics of the nation.

This included the promotion of an increase in the number of black scientists with specialised skills in the following research fields:

  • Biostatistics
  • Data Science
  • Digital Health
  • Demography
  • Epidemiology
  • Health Economics
  • Genomics and Immunology


Requirements for applications:

  • Be a South African citizen
  • Be Black Candidate
  • Have a fully-developed research proposal for a MSc or PhD.
  • Be registered at a University
  • You will need to ensure that you include a written commitment of participation by an experienced research supervisor who is willing to train the student for the entire duration of the degree.
  • Ensure availability of research funding for the project and appropriate facilities to effectively conduct the research project.

Keep in mind that registration at a historically disadvantaged institution will be considered a distinct advantage.

Outcomes will be made known before the end of June 2020.
